The residents of Bijeli Brijeg are all too familiar with the longing to return home and unwind after a tiring day, only to encounter the constant challenge of finding parking. It often leads to an exhausting cycle of searching through the neighborhood, hoping for a stroke of luck to free up a space. In moments of discouragement, some individuals resort to “creative” methods of inventing new parking spots, which, unfortunately, receive criticism from other residents the following morning.

The issue of parking even marked my arrival into this world. My mother needed to go to the maternity ward, and my aunt came to care for my sister. My mom and dad, with me inside my mom’s womb, headed towards the hospital. It was around three o’clock in the morning. However, they were met with an astonishing situation in the parking lot—a car had deliberately blocked ours. The audacity of someone to impede the use of another vehicle! They didn’t consider the possibility of an emergency, which was exactly what we were facing. In a fit of anger, my father kicked the offending car, leaving my mother in pain as he went to retrieve the keys to my aunt’s car. Thankfully, they arrived at the hospital in time, and shortly after, I entered the world.

Growing up in Bijeli Brijeg, I became accustomed to the omnipresence of cars. As children, it was a constant challenge to find a play area that wasn’t occupied by parked vehicles. We often had to interrupt our games to make way for passing cars. Unfortunately, even the designated “play circle” in our neighborhood, intended for leisure and fun, was predominantly used as a parking space. On multiple occasions, emergency services were unable to access building entrances due to parked cars. The reckless parking habits of residents posed a significant problem for larger delivery vehicles, which struggled to maneuver through tight spaces to reach the nearby stores. I recall a specific incident when store employees were unable to open the shop because someone thoughtlessly parked their vehicle right in front of the entrance.

The presence of cars parked on sidewalks and roads poses significant problems and dangers for both pedestrians and drivers alike. Some negligent drivers choose to park in designated green areas as well.

My 18th birthday granted me the chance to pursue my long-held aspiration of obtaining a driver’s license. Seeing my classmates begin driving, I eagerly awaited my turn. I yearned to experience the sense of freedom and independence that driving would bring. Previously, I hadn’t paid much attention to traffic, as my primary concern was adhering to pedestrian rules. However, now I was preparing myself for a different, yet immensely responsible role in the realm of transportation.

The theoretical driving lessons opened up a completely new world for me. I began to notice traffic signs that had previously seemed insignificant. While strolling through the city, I put my knowledge of traffic signs to the test, using an app commonly used in driving schools for verification. It was fascinating to peruse the “retro” driving manual and go through the popular practice tests I discovered in my grandmother’s attic, which my mom had used 35 years ago. Once I passed the theoretical part of the exam, the practical training commenced. It was a mixture of excitement and stress. Every driving session brought about unexpected situations that I had to navigate.

I eagerly anticipated each driving lesson with enthusiasm. Throughout the training, I gained a newfound understanding of the crucial role pedestrians play in traffic and the unfortunate disregard they often face in our city. It was disheartening to witness the numerous instances of drivers neglecting to stop at pedestrian crossings, while some pedestrians recklessly step onto the road without caution. These experiences taught me the importance of maintaining focus and being prepared to react appropriately while behind the wheel. As I embarked on the journey of becoming a driver, I recognized the significant responsibility I held not only towards myself but also towards fellow road users.

On the day of the driving test, I was very nervous, but fortunately, it went smoothly. The instructor congratulated me, emphasizing the opportunity I now had to become a skilled and responsible driver. I etched those words into my memory.

I got the “P” sticker for the car I was driving. I was excited to drive on my own, but it didn’t go exactly as I had envisioned. Driving with the instructor was much easier since I knew they could intervene if something went wrong. The responsibility of being the sole controller of the vehicle made me uneasy, but my desire to drive was stronger. I started by practicing in an empty parking lot and later ventured into the city. Whenever I had free time from school, I would venture out of the city with my dad. Gradually, I gained confidence and began driving within the city as well. Each drive presented new challenges that I had to overcome. While it’s satisfying when everything goes smoothly, I believe I learn the most from unexpected situations. Most drivers are considerate and patient with beginners, although there are some who are impatient. I am gradually adapting to my new role in traffic, which is crucial in today’s world.

The presence of parked cars on the road and the narrow streets leading to my neighborhood has become a significant source of concern for me. It is consistently stressful to make my way home during the afternoon and evening hours, as finding a convenient parking spot near my building is almost impossible. Often, I have to circle around the neighborhood for a long time in search of an available parking space. My intention is to always respect traffic regulations and park responsibly, ensuring that I neither obstruct nor hinder anyone’s passage, nor encroach upon the space where children should freely play. I earnestly hope that the local authorities will take appropriate measures to address the parking predicament, thereby making my neighborhood an even more delightful place to reside.
